McLaren P1 production has ended. Sad face

A moment of silence, please, for the McLaren P1.

The final one has rolled off the production line, drawing to a close the most technologically advanced, if not quite the fastest, chapter of McLaren’s road car career so far.

All 375 P1s have now been produced, with P1 one (silver) and P1 375 (orange) pictured together below. Two years and three months separate their production, with each P1 taking around 800 hours to produce, 105 different people involved in the manufacturing of each one.

North and South America received most of P1 production – around 34 per cent – with Europe getting a quarter of the 375-strong run. But it’s an understatement to say creating a modern-day successor to the legendary McLaren F1 was never going to be easy.

So instead of aiming to best its 388kph top speed and utterly driver-focused ethos, McLaren instead looked to make one of the cleverest supercars of all time.

Technological highlights are numerous. How about a 903bhp petrol-electric drivetrain? Downforce levels akin to a ginormously winged GT3 racing car? Braking components influenced by space travel?

Of course there was performance, too, with a 2.8-second 0-100kph time, a 350kph top speed and a sub-seven minute lap of the Nürburgring.

Don’t shed too many tears, though; the end of P1 production simply means that manufacturing of its simply deranged - and  ven quicker - track sibling, the P1 GTR, can get into full swing. Every cloud, and all that…

Mercedes GLE 450 AMG Coupe review, test drive

Imitation is the best form of flattery they say, more so if it’s by your arch rival that joins the segment you created eight years ago. Meet the GLE Coupe, Mercedes’ blatant take on the BMW X6, the car that pioneered the crossover-coupé niche. But what sets it apart? 

What does it look like?

The transformation of the M-class into the GLE has spawned not just a facelift but a four-door coupé body style as well. Apart from taking up the same amount of road space as the regular GLE on which it is based, visually it is completely different and more like a CLA that’s been pumped up. In fact, all the sheet metal is different to get the right proportions and sitting on those massive 21-inch wheels, the GLE Coupe will turn heads wherever it goes. It’s another fine product born out of the new thinking in Mercedes’ school of design that has transformed the image of the company.

The insides are very familiar and as expected there’s a lot borrowed from the GLE. In fact, the dashboard is identical. But given the sporty nature of the car, the seats are a lot more cosseting and there’s a greater sense of luxury thanks to the perforated Nappa leather. As expected, the rear isn’t madly spacious but it’s not too cramped either. There’s a surprisingly generous amount of knee room, and headroom isn’t bad either. Mercedes designers have done a great job balancing the swooping coupé roofline with internal room. Unlike the regular, the coupé version is strictly a four-seater. You can squeeze a passenger in the middle but the way the seat contours jut out makes this quite uncomfortable.

Jaguar has opened bookings for its latest and most affordable offering yet, the XE sports sedan. The XE is the first car to feature an aluminium-intensive monocoque in its segment, which includes cars like the Mercedes-Benz C-class, BMW 3-series, Volvo S60 and the Audi A4.

 

Unlike its rivals that come in both petrol and diesel guises, Jaguar will offer the XE with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, available in two states of tune, producing 197bhp and 237bhp. The engines will be coupled to six- and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

 

The XE is equipped with torque vectoring by braking and All Surface Progress Control (ASPC). Interiors get soft-grain Windsor leather seats, a panoramic, sliding sunroof, ambient lighting, a 380-watts Meridian audio system and an eight-inch touchscreen interface for its navigation and InControl infotainment system.

 

Jaguar will launch the XE on 3 February at the 2016 Auto Expo. The sedan is expected to be priced competitively around the Rs 38-lakh mark, and the British marque is likely to build the sedan at the Jaguar Land Rover facility in Pune. 

Delhi Auto Expo 2016: Record number of launches this year

The Delhi Auto Expo, kicking off from February 5, is just around the corner and if you were short of reasons for feeling excited about India’s largest automobile extravaganza, then this piece of news should be your elixir. It is being reported that the upcoming edition of the Delhi Auto Expo will be the largest in terms of the number of launches.

With a total of 85 passenger cars, utility vehicles, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles all set to be introduced at this biennial event, petrolheads are in for a real treat, if a report in the Economic Times is to be believed. The number has thus gone up by 20 per cent from the previous edition and has almost doubled up from 2012.

The report further points out that around 20 of the new launches will come from outside the Indian borders. The crowds are also set to soar this year, with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) expecting footfalls ranging up to 6 lakh people during the course of the event.

One of the most exciting launch on the cards is Maruti Suzuki’s new compact SUV, the Vitara Brezza; the XA Alpha prototype whose name was revealed in a teaser recently, as we had reported. The new Suzuki Vitara Brezza will get both petrol and diesel engines. While it will be introduced with the 1.4-litre K14B petrol unit that is also seen on the Ertiga, and makes 95PS and 130Nm, it will also come in diesel form with a 1.3-litre DDiS unit that produces 90PS of peak power and 200Nm of torque. Also expect the Vitara Brezza to get the 1.6-litre diesel that you get on the S-Cross making 320Nm of peak torque.

Mercedes-Benz unveils New E-Class at Detroit Auto Show 2016

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new E-Class at the ongoing 2016 Detroit Auto Show. The test mules of the new E-class had been appearing on the internet for few months now. The new E-class follows a similar design philosophy as its smaller sibling, the C-Class and the luxurious flagship S-Classmodels. On the exterior, the new E-Class receives high-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps packed with 84 high performance LEDs in each unit. Compared to its outgoing version, the new E-Class features a longer wheelbase by 65mm and overall increase in length by 43mm. At the back, as an optional feature for the tail lamps, instead of the regular reflectors one can opt for stardust-effect LED light units which recreates ‘the glow of a jet engine’ as claimed by the manufacturer.

Moving to the interiors, the new E-Class takes a big leap from its previous version as it dashboard is occupied by two large displays in the top model. The steering wheel features touch-sensitive control pads making its first appearance in a car and music to the ears is attended by the dedicated Burmester 3D surround audio system.

Talking about features, the new E-Class is provided with a semi-autonomous driving system christened as ‘Drive Pilot’, which can drive the car by itself at highways speed limited up to 210kmph.

In the International market, the new E-Class will receive a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol under the badge of E200 producing 187PS of power. The E200d will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine producing 244PS of power. Both the variants will come with a new nine-speed automatic transmission.

Already unveiled in pixel form a few months ago, BMW finally unveiled the highly anticipated M2 Coupe at the ongoing 2016 Detroit Auto Show

BMW is showing off quite a fleet of models to its North American customers at the Detroit Auto Show, but it would be pretty safe to say that none of them – not even the ultra-futuristic i8 -- are drawing as many eyeballs and capturing as many hearts as the M-fettled version of the 2-Series sedan, the BMW M2 Coupe.

With motive power coming from a 3-litre 6-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo engine that pumps out 365 PS of peak power and 465 Nm of torque, the BMW M2 can zip from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.3 seconds (with the optional M Double Clutch Transmission and Launch Control activated), and on to an electronically restricted top speed of 250 kmph. The 0-100kmph dash is accomplished in 4.5s with the six-speed manual gearbox. The peak torque can also be increased to as much as 500 Nm in short bursts under overboost.

Throw in other goodies like 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber, an active differential, and a seriously aggressive-looking body kit, and you’ve got the recipe for the perfect weekend track monster that can also ferry you to work day in and day out in comfort.

When asked if a four-door variant of the M2 is in the cards, BMW Chief of Sales Ian Robertson said that BMW “has had a lot of success with four door versions. We may look at more variants of the M2, but for now, it remains a two-door.”

Now for the price. When equipped with the manual transmission, the M2 will cost $52,695 (approx. Rs 35 lakh) in the US of A. With the DCT, it’ll be $2,900 (Rs 2 lakh) more.

UM Motorcycles to launch Renegade Commando and Sport S on 3rd February

Displayed at the recent EICMA 2015 in Italy, American bike manufacturer UM Motorcycles will be launching the India-bound models of the Renegade series on 3^rdFebruary 2016. UM motorcycles will be offering the Renegade Commando and theRenegade Sport S as their initial offering to the Indian masses.

Both the bikes will be powered by a 279cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel injected engine which will make 26.6PS at 8600rpm and 22.76Nm of peak torque at 6300rpm. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Braking duties will be handled by disc brake at the front and drum brake are the rear. ABS will be skipped to keep the price competitive. The Renegade Commando is the base model offering from the brand, whereas the Sports S will have bolder design and contrasting colour inflections on the matte black paint job.

UM motorcycles have provided an interesting feature on their model line-up by providing a USB charger port on the body of the instrumental console which allows the rider to clamp the GPS unit or smartphone for usage and not worry about draining the battery on long journeys.

On the factor of pricing, we expect the renegade Commando to be launched under the Rs 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom) mark and the Renegade Sport S to be priced between Rs 1.6-1.8 lakh (ex-showroom). Both the models will compete against the Royal Enfield range in the cruiser segment.

Porsche unleashes sub-3-seconds 911 Turbo and Turbo S at Detroit

Last year, Porsche created a minor flutter when it announced that all the models of the 911, arguably the world’s most iconic sportcar badge, will be going the way of the turbocharger. It all started with the standard Carrera and Carrera S, and will follow with the Carrera 4 and Targa shortly. Then, to no one’s surprise, Porsche revealed that the 911 Turbo and Turbo S will retain their powerful forced-induction engines, while benefiting from a similar set-up.

And it is here in Detroit. Meet the new Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S, now with, err, turbos. By the way, these are also the fastest and most powerful production versions of the 911 money can buy right now.

At the heart of both the Turbo and Turbo S is a more powerful 3.8 litre, twin-turbocharged cylinder engine. In the Turbo, the engines churns out 540 PS of peak power while in the Turbo S, it produces 580 horses. Mated to Porsche's revered all-wheel-drive system, the flat-six cylinder engine can propel the Turbo to 96 kmph from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds and on to a top speed almost nudging 320 kmph.

The Turbo S is even faster. According to Porsche, it is capable of sprinting to 96 kmph in just 2.8 seconds and attain a top speed of 330 kmph.

Both the 911 Turbo and Turbo S will also feature upgraded aerodynamics, improved traction system as well as a revised engine computer programming to increase fuel economy. They also come with a new infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen monitor and Google Earth maps. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) offers a 7-inch touchscreen display with features such as handwriting recognition and Wi-Fi connectivity. Smartphone aficionados will have to get used to the idea that, while Apple CarPlay is now offered, Porsche has refused to include Android Auto, reportedly due to Google asking for too much information on the vehicle's side.

Style wise, the new 911 Turbo and Turbo S are easily recognizable, with unique front and rear fasciae, angular quadruple tail-lights, and 20-inch wheels.

The new 911 Turbo and Turbo S will be available this April in both coupe and convertible body styles. The Turbo starts at around $159,000 (Rs 1.06 crore) in the US of A, while the Turbo S starts at a smidge over $188,000 (Rs 1.26 crore). With these two new introductions, the current 911 lineup now consist of a staggering 21 models.

2016 Detroit Motor Show: 2017 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback unveiled

Following the global unveil of the Cruze sedan in June last year, Chevrolet has now unveiled its hatchback version at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show. The Cruze hatchback will be based on the same platform as its sedan sibling and will in fact even share some of its design cues.

Talking about design, up front the new Cruze hatchback will look identical to the sedan. It has a narrow looking grille up front that flaunts the bowtie Chevy logo. On either side of it are sleek headlights with Daytime Running Lights. In profile, the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback makes its distinct identity thanks to its sloping roofline and the integrated spoiler. At the back, the Cruze gets a sharp looking bumper and wrap around tail lights.

On the inside, considering that the Cruze hatchback is based on the same D2XX platform as the sedan, it is expected to be generous in terms of space. Chevrolet revealed that just like the sedan, the Cruze hatch will also have a 2,700mm wheelbase. As far as the weight is concerned, the 2017 Cruze hatchback weighs 91kg lighter than its previous generation model. Boot space stands at an impressive 524 litres and can be increased to 1,336 litres by folding the rear seat flat.

The Cruze hatchback will sport a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit that is good for 153 horses and makes 240Nm of torque. This engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed HydraMatic autobox. The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will go on sale in the American market around August 2016. It will be sold in two trims – LT and Premier. It will also come with an optional RS package.

Jeep displays India-bound Grand Cherokee SRT at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show

American SUV manufacturer Jeep has showcased the Grand Cherokee SRT at North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) also known as Detroit Motor Show. The Grand Cherokee SRT along with the Wrangler will be the initial models to be launched soon in the Indian market. The Grand Cherokee SRT is a powerful luxurious SUV with most of the modern amenities. The Grand Cherokee SRT on display at the Jeep pavilion is an updated version with an aggressive styling with its signature LED daytime running lights wrapped around Bi-xenon headlamps and muscular grille completing its look.

The interior of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is dominated by an attractive centre console that can be used to control the SUV’s electronic features. The Grand Cherokee SRT is one of the few SUV to incorporate a launch control feature which is located ahead of the gear selector knob. The Grand Cherokee SRT gets light-weight carbon fibre trim accents on the driver door, dashboard and front passenger door. हे वत्स! सब नेताओं की नीति एक है। भले ही इनकी पार्टी अलग-अलग है। भले ही इनके झंडे अलग-अलग हैं। भले ही इनकी टोपियां अलग-अलग हैं। भले ही इनके चुनाव चिन्ह भी अलग हैं।

तू इनका झंडा, इनकी टोपी, इनका चिन्ह और इनके नाना प्रकार के रंग देखकर भ्रम‌ित मत हो। ये मन कर्म और वचन से एक ही हैं। तू इन्हें बुद्धि और व्यवहार से भी एक ही जान। इनके ये नाना रूप तो सिर्फ माया हैं। इन सभी रूपों के पीछे छुपे उस असली रूप को पहचान।

ये बिना खेले खेलते हैं। बिना खाए खाते हैं। ये बिना किए करते हैं और बिना काम कमाते हैं। इनकी महिमा अपार है। ये जो कहते हैं उसे डेफिनेटली नहीं करते और जो करते हैं उसे छुपाए छुपाए फिरते हैं। अपनी कीर्ति के मोह में कोई नेता ही इनके किए कराए को खोलता है।

हे वत्स! इनके मुहं में राम और बगल में रिश्वत है। जुबान पर नीति उपदेश और हथेली पर कमीशन है। जिस तरह चकोर को चांद, मोर को सावन की घटाएं, बिल्ली को दूध और सूअर को कीचड़ प्रिय है, ठीक उसी प्रकार इन्हें घूस से प्रेम है।

जिनका पर‌िवार होता है, उनका सिर्फ परिवार खाता है। मगर जिनका परिवार नहीं होता उनके तो इतने छुपे पर‌िवार होते हैं कि उनके नाम से खाने वालों की गिनती कर पाना मुश्किल होता है। उनके सखा और सखियां। सखा और सखियों के परिवार। उनके रिश्तेदार। रिश्तेदारों के रिश्तेदार। सब खाते हैं। इन सबको खाने से भला कौन रोक सकता है।

इसलिए बिना परिवार वाले नेता विवश होते हैं। उन्हें जनता पर ज्यादा टैक्स लगाने पड़ते हैं। उनके साथ खाने वालों की फौज बड़ी होती है। दूसरी ओर पर‌िवार वाले नेता का सिर्फ पर‌िवार खाता है। वह नेता के सखा और सखियों को नहीं खाने देता। उनके रिश्तेदारों को तो फटकने भी नहीं देता।

हे वत्स! ये जो खा रहे हैं तो इन्हें खाते हुए देख। इनके प्रशंसा गीत गा। इनकी ओर अंगुली मत कर। तू अगर इनकी ओर अंगुली दिखाएगा तो राष्ट्रद्रोही कहलाएगा। नेता का क्या है, वह तो फिर यही नारा लगाएगा- न, मैं खाऊंगा। न, मैं खाने दूंगा।

बार बार बमियाल

पांच महीने में यह दूसरा मौका है जब जम्मू-कश्मीर से सटे पंजाब के इलाके में पाकिस्तानी आतंकवादियों ने घुसपैठ की है। गत जुलाई में दीनानगर आतंकी हमले की जांच में भी यह सामने आया था कि घुसपैठ बमियाल के पास उज्ज दरिया से सटे रास्ते से हुई।

इस बार भी आतंकवादियों की उपस्थिति की पहली जानकारी नरौट जैमल सिंह के पास बमियाल के रास्ते पर ही मिलती है। हालांकि अभी तक कोई आधिकारिक पुष्टि नहीं है, मगर यह माना जा रहा है कि घुसपैठ के लिए वही पुराना रास्ता इस्तेमाल किया गया। यह संभावना इसलिए भी वजन रखती है क्योंकि पंजाब में यह इलाका ऐसा है जहां कंटीली बाड़ नहीं है। खासकर जम्मू-कश्मीर से सटे इलाके में। हालांकि यहां बीएसएफ की चौकी और नाइट विजन कैमरे लगे हैं। दूसरी ओर पाकिस्तान में इखलासपुर का जंगल है, जहां घुसपैठिये आतंकवादी दिनभर साजोसामान के साथ छुपे रह सकते हैं। अंधेरे और धुंध का फायदा उठाते हुए घुसपैठ कर सकते हैं। तस्करों के लिए भी यह मुफीद इलाका माना जाता है। हालांकि बीएसएफ ने इस इलाके से घुसपैठ की घटना होने से अभी तक इंकार ही किया है।

यह सवाल उठ रहा है कि बार बार बमियाल ही क्यों? क्यों नहीं हमने कोई सबक लिया। जुलाई में हुई घुसपैठ के बाद इस जगह की बाड़बंदी और नदी धारा को इलैक्ट्रिक करेंट से सुरक्षित बनाने पर ध्यान नहीं दिया। पिछले साल जुलाई में हुई घुसपैठ के बाद भी उस रास्ते को खुला छोड़े रखना एक बड़ी सुरक्षा चूक है। इसका लाभ पाकिस्तान ने उठाया है।

लंबे समय से आतंकवाद पाकिस्तान की विदेश नीति का हिस्सा है। वह दो चेहरे बनाकर भारत को छल रहा है। नवाज शरीफ उसका कूटनीतिक चेहरा हैं। सेना और आईएसआई ही विदेश के मोर्चे पर मुख्य एग्जिक्यूटिव चेहरा हैं। कूटनीतिक चेहरे निरीह दर्शाने में ही पाकिस्तान का लाभ है। अगर पाकिस्तान को भारत के साथ बातचीत की मेज पर बैठना पड़ा और बातचीत सही दिशा में चलती रहे तो वहां के हुकमरानों को कई ठोस कदम उठाने होंगे। वहां चल रहे आतंकी शिविर बंद करने होंगे। दाऊद, सईद, नीटा, जफ्फरवाल जैसे तमाम सरगनाओं को भारत को सौंपना होगा। इसलिए हर बार बातचीत को बीच में ही डीरेल किया जाता है।
पिछला प्रयास भी इसका उदाहरण है। बातचीत का दिन तय हो गया था मगर ऐन मौके पर हुर्रियत को पक्ष बनाने की बात कहकर पाकिस्तान की सरकार ने इसे पटरी से उतार दिया। अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुदाय का दबाव लगातार बना हुआ है, इसलिए पाकिस्तान सरकार बार बार उसी बहाने से नहीं बच सकती। इसलिए इसबार सेना और आईएसआई ने पठानकोट एयरबेस पर हमला कर एक नई चाल चली है।
हमें पाकिस्तान की दोहरी नीति के भ्रम में फंसने से बचना चाहिए। हमें इस सत्य को आधार मानना चाहिए कि लश्कर और जैश कोई आतंकी संगठन न होकर पाकिस्तान के भाड़े के सैनिक है। पाकिस्तानी सेना इनके लिए प्रशिक्षण शिविर चलाती है। आईएसआई इन्हें भारत पर हमलों के लिए जरूरी जानकारियां उपलब्ध कराती है।
अगर हम इन्हें सिर्फ आतंकवादी हमला कहते हैं तो पाकिस्तान को इसकी नैतिक जिम्मेदारी से भी मुक्त कर देते हैं। यह पूरी तरह पाकिस्तान प्रायोज‌ित हमला है। भारत जब भी पाकिस्तान की ओर दोस्ती का हाथ बढ़ाता है, हमारे देश की पीठ में पाकिस्तान छुरा घोंपता है। पाक‌िस्तान के हुक्मरानों का विश्वास दोस्ती में नहीं बंदूक की गोली में है।

Number (वचन)

Many of you might have a confusion on how the noun changes from singular to plural in Hindi. The understanding of grammatical number is important to understand the meaning of whole sentence, let me show you how you can determine or change the number from singular to plural.

In Hindi, there are two kind of grammatical numbers:

1. एकवचन (Ek Vachan) (Singular Number)
The word through which we get to know that the quantity is one i.e. लता (Creeper), बच्चा (Child), कुत्ता (Dog), कमरा (Room) etc.

2. बहुवचन (Bahu Vachan) (Plural Number)
The word through which we get to know that the quantity of something is more than one i.e. लताएँ (Creepers), बच्चे (Children), कुत्ते (Dogs) , कमरे (Rooms)  etc.

Let me show you how you can make plural form from singular form. This will also help you to differentiate between singular and plural in Hindi.First bracket shows the romanised spelling and second one shows the meaning in English.

Masculine Nouns

Some noun require that you change the आ at the end to ए to convert them to a plural.

Official Letter in Hindi

As many of our Hindi learners might be living in India and have to communicate with various official departments at some point of time during your stay, you might need to write a letter in Hindi if you happens to live in some of the states where the preferred language for official communication is Hindi.

Writing an official letter in Hindi is not very different than an official letter in English in format, the only thing that you need to take care of is the official vocabulary.

Let me show you the format of official letter in Hindi. Let’s write a letter to the regional income tax officer to notify him or her about a mistake in your income tax for the previous year.

A official letter usually start with the sender address. In Hindi letter, it is usually positioned on the upper right corner.

विजय सिंह, (Your name)
B–26 महारानी बाग, (House number and street/ locality name)
नई दिल्ली। (name of the state)

दिनांक : 24.04.2012 (date)

After placing your address, place 2 line breaks and then detail of the concerned official with name of the department and location on the left side.

सेवा में, (To)
श्रीयुत आयकर आधिकारी,  (Official title to which the letter is addressed)
नई दिल्ली विभाग, (Name of the department or institute)
नई दिल्ली (Name of the state)

Then comes the subject of the letter after 2 line breaks as,

विषय (Subject) : आयकर में त्रुटि। (Error in Income Tax)

After the subject line, place 2 line breaks and address the the receiver as ,

मान्यवर (Excellency) or
महोदय (Sir) or महोदया (Madam)

Now, after placing 2 line breaks the sender writes the main message of the letter,

मैं आपको सूचित करना चाहता हूँ की मेरे वित्त वर्ष २०१४ के आयकर में त्रुटि है। मेरा आपसे निवेदन है की कृपया मेरे वित्त वर्ष २०१४ के आयकर में यथाशीघ्र त्रुटि का निवारण करने का कष्ट करे।

(I would like to bring to your notice that there is a mistake in my income tax for the financial year of 2014. I would like to request to you to correct the mistake in my income tax for the financial year as soon as possible.)

After the main message we close the letter with the following in the lower left corner after 2 line breaks,

धन्यवाद, (Thank you)

भवदीय (Yours truly, or yours sincerely)
विजय सिंह (Your name)

Now, you can combine all the part and you have your this official letter. The above mentioned part combine to produce the sample official letter on the error in income tax and look like this,

Important Words with Multiple Meanings in Hindi

You might have heard some of the words in Hindi which occurs quite often and therefore learned the meaning. But you heard the same word but it means completely different than you’d expected! Don’t disappoint yourselves, it is not your fault. There are words in Hindi language which carry multiple meanings.  Let me show you some important words which have multiple meaning as per the context.

अच्छा (Accha) – Nice, well, good, really.
This word is really a multipurpose word which can be used in a variety of situations to convey different meanings. Let me show you some of the examples.

1. अच्छा! (Accha!) – Great! or nice!
2. बहुत अच्छा गाना गया! (Bahut accha gana gaya!) – you’ve sung very well!
3. अच्छा? (Accha?) – Really?

ठीक (Thik) – Well, okay, fine, careful
This word is also used very often and may have different meanings as per the situation. Some of the examples are:

1. ठीक है (Thik hai) – Okay (or fine)
2. ठीक से जाना (Thik se jana) – drive carefully or go carefully.
3. ठीक से रहना (Thik se rehna) – be careful.
4. आप ठीक हो? (Aap thik ho?) – are you well?

वाला/वाली (Wala/Wali) – Genitive case (of)
This word is simple to understand and remember if you think of this as genitive case or possessive case. For example, दूधवाला (Dudhwala) – lit. Man of milk (Milkman). Further examples:

1. सब्जीवाला (Sabjiwala) – Veg. Grocer)
2. रिक्शावाला (Rikshawala – Riksha puller)
3. दुकानवाला (Dukanwala – Shop Owner)

कौनसा काम? (Kaunsa kaam?) – Which work?
1.कलवाला (Kalwala) – of yesterday (kaam/work is omitted)
2.स्कूलवाला (Skoolwala) – of school (kaam/work is omitted)

Further examples:

कौनसा घर? (Kaunsa ghar?) – which house?
1. नीले रंग वाला (Pile rang wala) – of yellow color
2. पीले रंग वाला (Nile rang wala) – of blue color

कौनसा पेन चाहिए? (Kaunsa pen chahiye) – which pen do you want?
1. स्याही वाला (Syaahi wala) – of ink (a fountain pen).

यह काम किसने किया?! (Yeh kaam kisne kiya?!) – who did this?!
1. छोटे वाले ने (Chote wale ne) – the small one.

बात (Baat) – Conversation, matter, news, etc
This word may confuse as it also has multiple meanings and you must know the context to which this will make any sense. Some of the examples are:

1. मैं आप से बात करना चाहता हूँ। (Mein aap se baat karna chahta hoon) – I would like to talk to you.
2. यह बात तो बहुत अच्छी है। (Yeh baat to bahut acchi hai) – This is a good news.
3. क्या बात है! (Kya baat hai!) – Awesome!
4. क्या बात है? (Kya baat hai?) – What is the matter?

Alankar (Figure of Speech)

Today, I would like to talk about an interesting topic in Hindi grammar.

अलंकार  (Alankaar) is a figure of speech which means ornaments or adornments. Just like the women use ornaments to enhance her beauty, Alankar in Hindi language are used essentially to enhance the beauty of a poem.

Alankar are broadly classified into two groups, these are:

1. शब्दालंकार (Shabdalankar, it came from two word Shabdh (Word) + Alankar (Ornaments)) – Certain specific words that create an ornamental effect in a verse/poem.

2. अर्थालंकार (Arthalankar it came from two word Artha (Meaning) + Alankar (Ornaments)) – The meaning of words that creates the required enhancement.

Most common शब्दालंकार (Shabdalankar) that you might find in the Hindi poetry are:

1. अनुप्रास (Anupras) (Alliteration) – When a consonant word repeats serially more than once.
Example: घेर घेर घोर गगन।. Here, “घ ” is repeated three times.

2. यमक (Yamak) (Homonym) – when same word repeats more than once but each time its meaning is different.
Example: सजना है मुझे सजना के लिए। Here, “सजना” means to make up/lover.

3. श्लेष (Shlesh) (Pun) – when a word is used once but it gives more than one meaning.
Example: मधुबन की छाती को देखो, सूखी इसकी कितनी कलियाँ। Here, “कलियाँ” means the flower that is not fully blossomed/Young children. Poet wants to describe a scene where a “मधुबन” (garden) is lacking, both in blossoming flowers and young children.

Most common अर्थालंकार (Arthalankar) that you might find in the Hindi poetry are:

1. उपमा (Upma) (Simile) – when a person or thing is compared in words with a similar but famous/well known person or thing.
Example: ताज महल सा घर। House like the Taj Mahal. Here, “घर” (house) is compared with a building which is famous for its beauty.

2. रूपक (Rupak) (Metaphor) – when a word is used for something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.
Example: पायो जी मैंने राम-रतन धन पायो। Here, “राम” (Ram, Hindu god) is suggested metaphorically as “रतन” (precious stones) and “धन” (money) .

3. अतिश्योक्ति (Atishyokti) (Hyperbole) – when a word is used of exaggerate something or someone, to evoke a strong feelings or to create a strong impression.
Example: दिल बादल बने, आँखें बहेने लगी। Here, “दिल” (heart) is exaggerated to “बादल” (cloud). The dramatic effect of this exaggeration would be, आँखें (eyes) that can tear as rain because the heart has turned into clouds (in pain).

Hindi Numbers 1 – 100

Numbers in Hindi can be a little tricky in the beginning, but once you notice some of the regular patterns, you can remember them easily.  Below is a handy table of Hindi numbers from 1 to 100.
